Pumpkin is a warm season crop sown around February to March for summer and June to July for the rainy season in most of India. Because vines spread widely, give generous spacing of about 2 to 3 m between pits and 1 to 1.5 m within the row, sowing two to three seeds per pit and thinning to the strongest one or two seedlings. Prepare pits with well rotted farmyard manure and a basal dose of fertiliser, then top dress nitrogen in splits. Hand pollinate in early morning if fruit set is poor. For larger fruit, limit the number of fruits per vine and keep moisture steady through drip with mulch. Confirm the locally recommended variety and exact spacing with your district horticulture office.

Limiting the fruit per vine is the trick for big pumpkins. When I let every fruit stay, I got many small ones. After I kept only a few good fruits per vine and removed the rest early, the remaining ones grew much larger and sold by weight.

Do not be stingy with the spacing. I once crowded the pits to fit more plants and the vines tangled, shading each other, with poorer fruit set. Pumpkin really needs room to run, so give it the wide spacing even if it feels like wasted land.
