What climate and soil suit custard apple (sitaphal) and is it good for dry land?

Custard apple (sitaphal) is one of the best fruit crops for dry, semi arid and even poor shallow soils, which is why it grows well on hilly and rainfed land in Maharashtra, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat and similar regions, often where little else is profitable. It is hardy and drought tolerant once established, tolerates a hot dry climate and a range of soils including light, shallow and gravelly ones, but it needs good drainage and does not like waterlogging or severe frost. It can be grown rainfed in moderate rainfall areas, though some protective irrigation improves yield and fruit size. Because it thrives where other fruits struggle, it is a low input option for marginal dry land. For better fruit size and a more reliable crop, improved varieties and some irrigation help.
