Date palm (khajur) is suited to hot, dry desert climates with long, very hot summers and low humidity during fruit development, which is why western Rajasthan, Kutch in Gujarat and similar arid zones are the main areas in India. High humidity and rain at ripening damage the fruit, so dry conditions at that stage are important. It tolerates sandy and even somewhat saline soils as long as drainage is good, and it is fairly drought-tolerant once established but gives commercial yields only with irrigation. Date palm is dioecious, needing male and female plants, so for fruit you plant female palms of good varieties plus some males or use male pollen for hand pollination.
