Okra Shoot and Fruit Borer Control

Symptoms

Drooping, withering and drying of growing shoots in the early stage as larvae bore into tender tips. Bored holes plugged with excreta are seen on shoots and on fruits. Affected fruits become deformed, twisted and unfit for sale. On cutting an infested fruit, a pinkish or greenish caterpillar is found inside feeding on the inner pulp.

Damage

One of the most serious pests of okra causing 20 to 40 percent shoot damage early and heavy fruit damage later. Fruit infestation can reach 50 percent or more in unprotected crops, drastically lowering marketable yield and quality. Boring inside fruits makes them unfit for market and consumption.

Organic & cultural control

Remove and destroy bored shoots and damaged fruits at every picking to break the pest cycle. Install pheromone traps for Earias at 5 traps per acre to monitor and trap male moths. Spray neem oil 1 percent or neem seed kernel extract 5 percent at fruit setting. Release Trichogramma egg parasitoids and spray Bacillus thuringiensis where larvae are young. Avoid continuous okra cropping and follow crop rotation.

Chemical control

Effective registered options include spinosad 45 SC, emamectin benzoate 5 SG, flubendiamide 480 SC or chlorantraniliprole 18.5 SC sprayed at first sign of damage and repeated as per label. Rotate insecticide groups to delay resistance and always observe the pre-harvest interval before picking since okra is picked frequently. Use only products labelled for okra borer, follow the recommended dose, and consult your local KVK or agronomist before spraying.

Prevention

Grow tolerant or resistant varieties where available and sow at the recommended time. Keep fields and bunds free of weeds and volunteer plants. Pick fruits regularly and remove infested shoots and fruits promptly. Practise crop rotation with non-host crops and avoid growing okra near old infested fields.
