Black Rot of Crucifers Control

Affects: CabbageCauliflowerBroccoliKnol-khol
Black Rot of Crucifers symptoms and control in Cabbage

Symptoms

Characteristic yellow V shaped lesions appear at the leaf margins with the point of the V directed inward toward a vein. The veins inside the lesion turn black, and the blackening can spread through the vein network into the stem. Affected leaves yellow and drop, plants become stunted and one sided, and cut stems show a black ring of darkened veins.

Damage

Black rot is the most serious bacterial disease of cabbage, cauliflower and other crucifers and is most severe in warm humid and rainy weather. It is seed borne and spreads by splashing water, contaminated tools and insects. Severe infection causes heavy leaf drop, stunting, rotting heads and total crop failure in susceptible varieties.

Organic & cultural control

Use certified disease free seed and treat seed with hot water at the recommended temperature and time to kill the bacterium inside. Follow a crop rotation of two to three years away from crucifers and destroy infected crop debris and cruciferous weeds. Provide good drainage, avoid working in wet fields, and dip seedling roots in a Pseudomonas fluorescens suspension where available.

Chemical control

Being a bacterial disease, black rot cannot be cured by ordinary fungicides, so management relies on clean seed and prevention. A protective spray of a copper based bactericide may help check spread under disease pressure, sometimes combined with a recommended antibiotic spray as advised locally. Use only labelled products at the correct dose, follow the pre-harvest interval and consult your KVK or agronomist before spraying.

Always follow the product label, the recommended pre-harvest interval, and your local KVK or agronomist. Pesticide approvals change, so verify before use.

Prevention

Start with certified, hot water treated disease free seed and resistant or tolerant varieties where available. Raise seedlings in a clean nursery, avoid overhead irrigation and working among wet plants, and disinfect tools. Follow crop rotation, control insects that spread the bacterium, ensure good drainage, and remove and destroy infected plants and debris.

FAQs

What are the yellow V shaped marks on my cauliflower leaf edges?
These V shaped yellow lesions pointing inward, with blackened veins, are the classic sign of black rot, a bacterial disease. It is seed borne and spreads in warm wet weather. There is no cure, so remove infected plants, avoid working in wet fields, and next time use hot water treated disease free seed and a resistant variety.
Why does hot water seed treatment help against black rot?
The black rot bacterium is carried inside and on the seed, so it comes with the crop from the start. Treating seed in hot water at the recommended temperature and time kills the bacterium without harming germination, giving a clean start. This is one of the most effective steps because the disease has no chemical cure.
Why should I not work in the cabbage field when it is wet?
The black rot bacterium spreads easily in water films and on hands, clothes and tools, so moving through a wet crop carries it from infected to healthy plants very fast. Working only when the foliage is dry, and disinfecting tools, greatly slows the disease. Also avoid overhead irrigation which splashes the bacterium around.
