Brown, water soaked patches on the curd plus a hollow, often brown lined stem is the textbook sign of boron deficiency in cauliflower, common on high pH, light, or over limed soils and after dry spells. For a standing crop, give a foliar spray of borax at 0.1 to 0.2 percent (1 to 2 g per litre), repeated once after 10 to 12 days, to limit further damage, though badly browned curds will not recover. For the next crop, apply borax to soil at about 4 to 5 kg per acre mixed well with FYM at transplanting. Boron has a narrow safe range, so measure carefully and spread evenly, because excess is toxic. Maintain even soil moisture. Base the dose on a soil test and your KVK; do not over apply.

I had the same hollow brown stem and learned the hard way that already damaged curds do not come back. Now I spray borax early as a preventive before the curd forms, not after I see the brown, and the heads come clean. Prevention is the real fix here.

Please be very careful weighing the borax. A friend doubled the dose thinking more is better and burnt the crop, because boron turns toxic fast above the safe level. I dissolve it in a little warm water first so it mixes fully and there are no strong spots in the tank.

Dry spells made it much worse in my field because boron moves with water and the plant cannot pull it up from dry soil. Keeping the moisture even with light regular irrigation, especially as the curd is forming, cut down the browning a lot along with the borax in the soil.
