A high-density mango orchard relies on drip and fertigation to feed many closely spaced trees precisely and keep them compact and productive. Lay drip lines along the tree rows with emitters matched to tree age and soil type, increasing the number and discharge of emitters as the trees grow and the root zone widens. Schedule irrigation by crop stage and weather, easing off during the rest and flowering induction phase and giving steady moisture during fruit development to avoid drop and cracking. Apply water-soluble fertilisers in small frequent doses through the drip following a stage-wise plan rather than dumping fertiliser at once. High-density blocks also need regular pruning to keep size in check. For the emitter layout and fertigation schedule for your variety and soil, confirm with your local KVK or horticulture department.

We started with emitters close to the young plant and added more as the trees grew, because the small root zone of a young tree does not need a wide wetted area yet. Matching the emitters to the tree age saved water and the trees grew evenly. A filter and regular flushing of the lines is a must, our drippers clogged the first season until we added proper filtration.

Splitting the fertiliser into many small doses through the drip gave us much better growth than the old practice of dumping it in the basin a few times. The trees got a steady supply and we wasted far less. Follow a stage-wise plan, easing off feed and water during the flowering induction phase, because pushing water and nitrogen then gave us leafy growth instead of flowering.

Do not skip the pruning in a high-density block thinking the drip alone keeps them small, because the trees still crowd and shade each other without regular cutting. We keep them open and at a pickable height with annual pruning, and the drip and feed then go into productive wood. Steady moisture during fruit development cut our fruit drop and cracking a lot compared to the irregular flood watering we used before.
