Mango training starts in the first two to three years to build a strong framework: select a single straight stem, allow the first scaffold branches at about 0.75 to 1 m height, and keep three to four well-spaced main branches in different directions for an open, balanced canopy. After bearing begins, light annual pruning removes dead, diseased, crisscrossing, and water-sprout shoots to let in light and air, which reduces hopper and anthracnose pressure. In high density orchards, regular post-harvest pruning controls tree size and keeps fruiting wood productive. Avoid very heavy cuts in one go on old trees; rejuvenation pruning is done in stages. Time major pruning just after harvest and confirm specifics with your state horticulture department.

Pruning right after harvest gives the new flush time to mature before the flowering season. When I pruned late the fresh shoots were still soft at flowering time and that wood did not bear. Timing matters as much as the cut itself.

Do not forget to protect the big cuts. On thick branches I apply a recommended paste or Bordeaux paint over the cut so borers and rot do not enter. An open wound on an old tree in our humid area invites trouble.

Water sprouts and inward-growing shoots come back every year, so I walk the orchard with a small saw a few times rather than doing it all once. Keeping the centre open made a clear difference to fruit colour and reduced the disease in the inner canopy.

For my old neglected trees the horticulture officer advised cutting back over two or three seasons, not in a single hard heading. The staged approach kept the trees alive and they came back into good bearing. A drastic one-time cut on an old tree can set you back badly.
