High-density apple orchards use dwarfing or semi-dwarfing clonal rootstocks instead of seedling rootstock so trees stay small, bear early, and pack many more plants per acre. Dwarfing rootstocks such as the M9 group give the highest density but need a permanent trellis or stake support and good irrigation, while semi-dwarfing types like MM106 are a bit more vigorous and need less support. Spacing tightens greatly compared to traditional seedling orchards, and the system relies on spur-type or well-trained varieties, drip or sprinkler irrigation, and disciplined pruning. The benefits are early fruiting, easier picking and spraying, and higher early yield, but the upfront cost of saplings and trellis is high. Confirm the rootstock, variety, and spacing for your altitude and site with the horticulture university or your local KVK.

We converted one block to high density on dwarfing rootstock and got fruit far earlier than the old seedling orchard, but budget properly for the trellis and the irrigation, it is not cheap.

On the M9 type the support is not optional, the roots are shallow and the trees lean and even topple under a crop without a strong trellis. We put in concrete or treated end posts and good wire because the cheap posts we tried first sagged in a few years. Plan the trellis as a permanent structure from day one.

Irrigation is the catch many overlook in the high-density system here, because the dwarf rootstocks have a small root zone and cannot survive a dry spell like the old deep-rooted seedling trees. We put in drip and it made the dense block reliable even in a poor rain year. Match the rootstock to your altitude as the university advises, what works lower down is not always right for the higher belts.

Pollination is the catch many forget in a dense block, so plant the recommended pollinizer variety spread through the rows, not bunched in one corner. A solid main variety with no pollinizer nearby set poorly for a neighbour of ours. Confirm the right pollinizer and the layout with the horticulture university for your variety.
