Apple scab is a fungal disease that makes olive-green to black scabby spots on leaves and fruit and spreads in cool wet spring weather, badly hurting marketability. The key is timing sprays to the early infection period around the green tip to petal fall stages when the fungus is most active, since later sprays are far less effective. Reduce the carryover by collecting and destroying fallen leaves and mummified fruit because the fungus overwinters in leaf litter, and prune for an open canopy that dries faster. Use labelled fungicides in the recommended rotation to avoid resistance, and follow the official scab warning or forecast service where available. For the exact spray calendar and products for your valley, follow the state horticulture advisory and your local KVK.

The early sprays at green tip and the following stages are everything in our Shopian orchard, if we miss that wet spring window the scab is already inside and no later spray fully cleans it. We watch the weather and the official scab alerts and do not delay the first protective spray. Spraying late is just throwing money at a problem that is already set.

Clearing the fallen leaves in the dormant season cut our scab pressure the next spring, because the fungus sits in that old leaf litter over winter and starts the new infection. We rake and remove or treat the leaf litter under the trees. It is tedious but it lowers how hard we have to fight scab in the season.

Rotating the fungicide modes of action is something I stress, because the year we leaned on one group too much it stopped working well and the scab broke through. We follow the rotation the horticulture advisory gives so resistance does not build. Pruning the canopy open so the leaves dry faster after rain also makes the sprays more effective in our wet valley.

We watch the official scab warnings closely because the first wet infection period in spring is when the protective spray has to be on the tree, not a week later. Missing that early window let the fungus get established and no later spray fully cleaned it. Follow the state advisory dates rather than a fixed calendar.

Pruning the canopy open so the leaves dry faster after rain made our sprays work better, because scab loves a damp shaded canopy. We thin out the crowded inside growth in the dormant season. It is extra work but it lowers how hard we fight scab through the season.
