The pomegranate fruit borer, also called anar butterfly, lays eggs on flowers and small fruit and the caterpillar bores in and ruins the fruit from inside. The most reliable protection is bagging individual fruits with butter paper or non-woven bags after fruit set, which also gives a cleaner skin for market. Combine bagging with orchard sanitation, removal and destruction of bored fruit, and pheromone or light monitoring to time any spray. If a spray is needed, use only a labelled insecticide at flowering to early fruit stage and observe the pre-harvest interval. For dose and the right spray window, confirm with your local horticulture department or KVK.

Bagging is what saved our crop in Bagalkot. We bag the fruit once it is past the small stage, after a protective spray has dried, so we are not sealing in any eggs already laid. The bagged fruit comes out with a clean skin and the borer entry holes dropped sharply.

The bored fruit lying in the field is the real source of the next lot, so we walk the rows twice a week and collect every cracked or holed fruit and bury it deep. Leaving even a few infested fruit kept our problem going year after year until we got strict about sanitation. It is boring work but it cuts the spray need.

We hang pheromone traps to watch the moth activity and only spray when the catch tells us the pressure is rising, which cut our number of sprays a lot. Spraying blind on a fixed date wasted chemical and still missed the real peak some years. Ask your KVK which lure and trap density suits your block.

On the bagging, we wait until a protective cover spray has fully dried before we tie the bags, so we are not sealing eggs inside with the fruit. The non-woven bags breathe better than plastic and we saw less rot inside them in the humid spell. Verify the bag type that works for your local weather before buying in bulk.
