In the double pruning, single cropping system used in much of Maharashtra, foundation (back) pruning is done in the monsoon period to build healthy fruitful canes, and fruit (forward) pruning is done later to bring out the crop for harvest in the dry season. Foundation pruning develops the canes and lays down the buds that will fruit, so the focus is on vine health, growth, and good cane maturity. Fruit pruning retains the fruitful buds and removes the rest so the vine pushes flower bunches for the marketable crop. The exact dates shift with region, variety, and weather, and getting the gap and bud retention right is key to yield and bunch quality. Confirm the pruning dates and buds per cane for your area with your local KVK or grape research station.

The thing that took me years to understand is that the crop you harvest depends on how well the canes matured after foundation pruning. If the foundation flush is weak or shaded, the fruit pruning later gives few bunches no matter what you do. So treat the monsoon foundation pruning as the real foundation of next season's income.

On our Sangli vines we check cane maturity by the brown colour and the tan-tan sound when you tap it before fruit pruning. Pruning immature green canes for fruit gives poor bud break. We also leave the right number of buds per cane as advised for our variety, because greedy bud retention just gives small bunches.

Weather around fruit pruning is critical in our Tasgaon area, an unexpected late rain right after forward pruning can cause downy mildew and ruin the bud break. We watch the forecast and keep the protectant ready before pruning. Getting the gap between the two prunings right for the local season is something the grape research station guided us on, do not just copy another district's dates.

We keep a record of the foundation pruning date and the cane growth each year, because comparing seasons taught us how the monsoon weather shifts the right gap before fruit pruning. A wet year needs a different approach than a dry one. Do not lock yourself to last year's calendar, read the canes and the weather.

Bud break after fruit pruning was uneven on our plot until we sorted out the cane maturity, so we now make sure the canes are well-lignified before forward pruning. A green immature cane just will not push a good crop no matter the treatment. The research station near Sangli helped us judge cane readiness the first couple of seasons.

Disease right after fruit pruning is the big risk in our area, so we keep the recommended protectant ready before we make the cut, especially if rain is forecast. One unlucky shower on fresh-pruned vines invited downy mildew the year we were careless. Confirm the protectant and timing with your KVK because the residue window matters if export is the plan.
