In the Nashik double-pruning system, growers do two prunings a year. The back or foundation pruning, usually around April, develops healthy canes and builds the fruiting wood for the next season but does not aim for a crop. The forward or fruit pruning, usually around October, is done on the matured canes to induce flowering and the marketable crop. Bud load, cane thickness, and the number of buds retained per cane are decided by variety and vine vigour. Good canopy management, balanced fertigation, and disease control between prunings are critical. Exact pruning dates and bud-load depend on your variety and season, so confirm with the National Research Centre for Grapes, Pune, and experienced local growers.

The fruitfulness comes from the cane you build at foundation pruning. If those canes are thin and shaded, the forward pruning will not give you good bunches no matter what you do. So I focus hard on canopy and sunlight in the back-pruning season.

Cane thickness is my guide for how many buds to keep. A pencil-thick well-ripened cane carries more buds than a thin one. An experienced neighbour walked my rows with me the first year and that hands-on lesson on bud load was worth more than any book.
