Fruit fly is best managed by combining methyl eugenol pheromone traps, orchard sanitation, and timely harvest at proper maturity. Hang methyl eugenol traps across the orchard well before fruit set begins so you can monitor and knock down the male population, and collect and deep-bury or destroy all fallen and infested fruit because they carry the next generation. Fruit bagging on selected trees gives clean export-grade fruit and avoids spray residue. If a cover spray is needed close to harvest, use only a labelled bait or insecticide and strictly observe the pre-harvest interval, since residue limits matter for both domestic and export markets. Confirm the trap density and any spray schedule with your local horticulture office or KVK.

In our Banganapalli block the traps work much better when we hang them at fruit height in shade, not in open sun where the lure dries out fast. We recharge the lure on the schedule the dealer marked and the catch stays steady. Sanitation is half the battle, the rotten drops under the tree are where the next lot breeds.

We started bagging the early fruit on a few trees for the local premium market and the difference in skin and price was clear. Use the proper non-woven bags after the fruit is past marble size, and tie them so wind does not rub the fruit. It is labour but the clean fruit fetches a better rate without any close-to-harvest spray.

A point on the pre-harvest interval from our experience near Vijayawada: if you must give a bait spray late, apply it as a spot or band on the trunk and lower canopy rather than a full cover spray, which the bait method allows and keeps residue low. Harvest at the right maturity and do not let fruit over-ripen on the tree, because soft ripe fruit on the tree is what pulls the flies in. Always check the label PHI before the last spray.

We also drape a few yellow sticky traps near the orchard edge to keep an eye on what is flying in, and harvest the early-maturing trees first so fruit does not hang around getting soft. The earlier you pick at proper maturity, the less time the flies get to lay in the fruit. Spacing the trees so the canopy is not a damp dark mass also seemed to lower the catch on our farm.
