Root knot nematode causes knotty galls on the roots of okra, brinjal, cucurbits and many vegetables, so plants stay stunted, wilt in the day and yield poorly even with good water and fertiliser. Confirm by uprooting a weak plant and looking for the bead like galls on the roots. Manage with crop rotation to non host crops, summer deep ploughing to expose soil to heat, adding well decomposed organic matter, and growing resistant or tolerant varieties where available. Marigold as a rotation or border crop and recommended bioagents can help reduce populations. Avoid moving infested soil on tools. Confirm a rotation and treatment plan with your KVK, as nematode levels need local assessment.

In Sikar my brinjal kept wilting in the day until I dug up a plant and saw the bead like root galls. Summer deep ploughing and adding lots of compost slowly improved that field.

A tip: a marigold border or rotation crop helped pull down the nematode in my okra field. I also clean my tools so I do not carry infested soil to a healthy plot.

Confirming it before acting saved me wasted effort. I uprooted a few weak plants and saw the bead like galls, so I knew it was nematode and not just poor feeding, then the rotation and organic matter plan made sense.

Rotating my okra and brinjal to a non host crop for a season, plus loads of well rotted compost, slowly brought a sick field back. There is no quick fix, it took a couple of seasons of patience.
