For drumstick (moringa) grown as an annual pod crop, improved types like PKM 1 and PKM 2 start bearing within about 6 to 8 months of sowing and can be grown at fairly close spacing for high density, often a few metres between plants. Cut back or top the young plants to about a metre to encourage low branching, which keeps pods within reach and increases pod number. Pods are harvested tender and green at the right length for the vegetable market, before they turn fibrous. After the main harvest, prune heavily to rejuvenate the plant for the next flush. Confirm exact spacing, variety and pruning schedule with your district horticulture office or KVK, as recommendations vary by region.

I top my PKM 1 moringa early so it branches low, which makes picking pods much easier. After the season I cut it back hard and it comes again strongly.

In Dindigul I grow PKM 1 moringa as an annual and topping the young plants to about a metre made picking pods so much easier. After the season I cut it back hard and it flushes again well.

A caution: harvest the pods tender and green at the right length. If I let them stay on they turn fibrous fast in our heat and the vegetable market will not take them.

I checked the exact spacing and pruning schedule with the district horticulture office before planting my block, since the high density advice varies. What they suggested for my area let me fit more plants without crowding and the pod number was good.
