Leaf miner damage shows as winding silvery white tunnels or serpentine mines inside the leaf, made by tiny maggots feeding between the leaf surfaces, which reduces photosynthesis and weakens beans and peas. Light attack on older leaves is tolerable, so act mainly when young plants or many leaves are affected. Remove and destroy heavily mined leaves, use yellow sticky traps to monitor adult flies, and conserve natural parasitoids by avoiding broad spectrum sprays. If treatment is needed, use a recommended insecticide as per label and rotate modes of action, respecting the pre harvest interval since pods are eaten. Confirm the product and dose with your KVK, as overspraying kills the parasitoids that normally control this pest.

In Hassan my beans got the winding white tunnels badly one season because I had been spraying broad chemicals that killed the parasitoids. Easing off the sprays let the natural enemies recover.

A small tip: I remove the worst mined older leaves and put up yellow sticky traps to watch the flies. Light damage on old leaves I just ignore now, it does not hurt the pods.

A point on beans: light leaf miner on old leaves I just leave alone, it does not hurt the pods. I only act on young plants and never broad spray, or I lose the parasitoids that control it.

Since the pods are eaten I am very careful about any spray timing. If I ever do treat young plants I check the pre harvest interval on the label and confirm the product with the KVK, and I never spray close to picking.
