My chilli leaves are curling and crinkling and look silvery. I think it is thrips. How do I manage them?

Chilli leaf curl from thrips, often called murda, is a major yield killer in the Guntur belt. Thrips rasp the leaves and cause upward curling, crinkling and a silvery, leathery look, and they also help spread virus. Manage them with an integrated approach because thrips resist insecticides fast. Use blue sticky traps to monitor, keep the field and bunds weed free as weeds harbour thrips, avoid excess nitrogen which makes the crop more attractive, and use healthy seedlings from a protected nursery. Rotate recommended insecticides for thrips strictly per label and KVK advice and never repeat the same chemical group spray after spray, because repeated use of one molecule is exactly what caused the severe resistance in this region. Mite infestation often comes along with thrips and also curls leaves, so get it correctly identified at your KVK before deciding the spray.

In Guntur the thrips have become very hard to kill because everyone sprayed the same chemicals. Rotating groups and keeping weeds out helped me more than just spraying more.

Starting clean from a net nursery delayed the murda for me. The seedlings reach the field without thrips already on them, so the problem starts later and is easier to manage. Going to the field with already infested seedlings was a losing start.

Easing off heavy nitrogen helped me. The lush soft growth from too much urea seemed to attract more thrips. Keeping nutrition balanced and the bunds clear of weeds, along with rotating sprays, gave better control than chasing it with more chemical.
