Transplant chilli seedlings when they are about 35 to 45 days old and have 4 to 6 true leaves and a stem like a pencil. Kharif crop nursery is usually sown around May to June and transplanted with the monsoon, while irrigated rabi crop is transplanted around October to November. Common spacing is 60 by 45 cm or 60 by 60 cm for irrigated bushy hybrids; closer 60 by 30 cm is used for compact types. Harden seedlings before transplanting and dip roots in a recommended fungicide and biofertiliser solution to reduce wilt. Plant in the evening and give a light irrigation immediately. Adjust spacing to your variety and whether you use drip and mulch; confirm local spacing with the Dharwad horticulture office.

In Dharwad I always transplant in the evening and water the same night. Morning transplanting in the heat used to set my seedlings back by a week. The evening planting with a light irrigation gives much less transplant shock.

If you raise seedlings in pro trays with coco peat instead of open beds, the root ball stays intact and the plants establish faster after transplanting. It costs a bit more but I get a more uniform stand and fewer gap fillings to do.

A point on spacing if you plan to use drip and mulch: going slightly wider helps you walk the rows for picking and spraying without breaking branches. Crowded plants also hold humidity and invite leaf diseases. I keep paired rows on the mulch bed so the drip line covers two rows.

Do not skip hardening the seedlings before you lift them. The first time I planted soft, tender nursery straight into the field, many wilted in the sun. Reducing watering and giving them some open sun for a few days before transplant made them tougher.
