Garlic is planted from cloves in rabi, usually around October to November in central India, and spacing and clove quality together decide bulb size. A common practice is to plant cloves at about 15 cm between rows and 10 cm between plants, with the pointed end up at a shallow depth, but the exact spacing and the seed rate per acre depend on clove size, so big cloves need more seed by weight. Too close a spacing gives many small bulbs while too wide wastes land, so follow the recommended geometry for your variety. Use only large, healthy outer cloves as discussed for seed selection, treat them before planting per KVK advice, keep the soil moist but well drained, and apply balanced fertiliser per your Soil Health Card. Confirm the exact spacing, seed rate and sowing window with your local KVK as these are tuned for your district.

Plant the clove pointed end up and at a shallow depth. When I planted too deep or sideways the sprouts came up bent and weak and the bulbs were smaller. Getting the orientation and depth right gave a more even, vigorous stand.

Do not crowd it too tight to save seed. The season I packed the cloves close I got a lot of small bulbs that fetched a poor rate. Sticking to the recommended spacing gave fewer plants per area but bigger, better gradeable bulbs that sold for more.

Keep the soil moist but well drained through the crop, garlic does not like to dry out and then get flooded. I keep steady light irrigations and make sure water does not stand. Good drainage with even moisture sized my bulbs better than heavy occasional watering.

Use big healthy outer cloves as your seed, the spacing only pays off if the clove is good. I once planted small inner cloves at the right spacing and still got small bulbs. Big cloves at the recommended gap is what gave me the bold bulbs, the two go together.
