Clove selection has a direct effect on bulb size, so it is worth doing carefully. Save seed from large, healthy, well filled bulbs of a good variety, and break them just before planting, not long before, so the cloves do not dry out. Plant only the large, plump outer cloves and keep the small inner cloves and any damaged, shrivelled, soft or diseased cloves out of the seed lot, because bigger cloves give bigger plants and bigger bulbs. Discard bulbs with rot or mould. A clove treatment before planting helps protect against soil borne rots, follow your KVK recommendation for this. Plant at the right depth and spacing with the pointed end up. Avoid using cloves from very small or diseased bulbs as your seed source year after year, refresh with good quality seed when needed.

Since I started planting only the big outer cloves and throwing out the tiny inner ones, my average bulb size went up clearly.

Break the bulbs only a day or two before planting. I once separated cloves well ahead of time and many dried out and gave weak, gappy plants. Keeping the bulbs whole until just before sowing kept the cloves fresh and firm.

Do not keep saving seed from the same patch forever. My bulbs slowly got smaller over a few years using my own seed. Refreshing with good quality seed of a known variety brought the size back. Selecting big cloves helps but the seed stock also needs renewing now and then.

Throw out any soft, shrivelled or mouldy cloves before planting, do not just go by size. One year I planted some big but slightly soft cloves to save seed and they rotted in the ground and left gaps. Now I keep only firm, healthy cloves whatever their size.

Plant the clove with the pointed end up and at the right depth. When I dropped them in any which way the sprouts came up bent and weak and the bulbs were uneven. Getting the orientation right along with picking the big outer cloves gave me a more even, well sized crop.
