Girdle beetle makes two cut rings around the stem or petiole where it lays eggs, and the portion above dries and breaks, while stem fly larvae tunnel inside the stem causing wilting, so both attack the stem early in the crop. Cultural control includes timely sowing, recommended seed rate to avoid overly dense crowded plants, and removing and destroying girdled and wilted shoots with the grub inside. Avoid excess nitrogen that makes soft growth. Seed treatment at sowing and a need based foliar insecticide at early infestation help, but timing is critical because once larvae are inside the stem sprays are less effective. Use only label recommended products and follow the PHI, and get the current insecticide schedule and dose from your local KVK.

Cutting off the girdled shoots below the two rings and destroying them takes the grub out of the field. I walk the rows in the early stage and snip them off. If you leave them the next generation builds up. It is tedious but it kept my plant stand intact.

Seed treatment at sowing protected my early crop a lot in Marathwada. By the time the girdle beetle and stem fly were active the seedlings already had some protection. Sowing on time at the recommended seed rate, not too thick, also kept the crop healthier and less attractive to these stem pests.

The mistake I made early on was waiting too long to act, by which time the larvae were already inside the stem and sprays did little. Timing is everything with these stem pests, so scout from the seedling stage and act on the early infestation, not after the plants start breaking. Always follow the label and PHI on any product.

Sowing too thick was making it worse on my field because the crowded soft plants seemed to attract more girdle beetle. Once I dropped to the recommended seed rate and cut back on the heavy urea the stand was sturdier and the damage came down. Keep the crop healthy and not lush, and remove the girdled shoots as you spot them.

Avoiding excess nitrogen was a quiet help for me, because the lush soft plants from heavy urea seemed to draw more girdle beetle. After I cut back to a balanced dose the plants were sturdier and the damage eased. Combine that with removing the girdled shoots and the stand held up.
