Soybean should be harvested when the leaves have dropped and most pods have turned brown and rattle, with grain moisture around the mid teens, because waiting too long in the field invites shattering and field losses. Harvesting too wet means storage problems and mould, while too dry leads to pod splitting and seed loss during handling. If you use a combine, set it for soybean and harvest in the cooler part of the day when pods are less brittle to cut shattering. Dry the grain down to a safe storage moisture before bagging. Choosing a variety with some shattering tolerance also helps in late harvest situations. For the exact harvest moisture target and combine settings, check with your local KVK.

I now harvest a touch earlier in the morning when pods are not bone dry, and shattering losses dropped a lot. Waiting for everything to dry fully in the field cost me grain on the ground.

When I started using a combine I lost extra grain until the operator set the machine properly for soybean. A wrongly set machine cracks the seed or shatters the pods. Insist the combine is adjusted for soybean and run it in the cooler hours, not in the dry heat of midday.

The variety choice matters if you cannot always harvest on the exact day. Some types hold their pods better and shatter less if the harvest gets delayed by rain or labour. I shifted to a variety with better shattering tolerance and the field losses came down. Ask your KVK which suits your area.

Keeping seed for next season is a reason to get the moisture right too. The year I harvested too dry and rough, the seed cracked and my germination next sowing was poor. Drying gently to a safe storage moisture and handling the grain carefully kept the seed sound. If you save your own seed, do a germination check before sowing.
