My soybean leaves are turning yellow in patches with mottling, spreading across the field in Indore. Is this yellow mosaic and how do I control it?

Bright yellow mottling and mosaic on soybean leaves is usually yellow mosaic virus, which is spread by whitefly, so controlling the virus means controlling the whitefly vector and using tolerant varieties. There is no spray that cures an infected plant, so prevention is the strategy: grow a YMV tolerant variety recommended for your area, sow on time, and rogue out early infected plants before whitefly spreads it further. Manage whitefly with yellow sticky traps and recommended insecticides used as per label, and avoid leaving infected weed and volunteer hosts around the field. Balanced nutrition and avoiding moisture stress keep plants better able to cope. For the YMV tolerant variety list and the current whitefly management schedule, check with your local KVK or the soybean research centre at Indore.

YMV hit me hard one year. Switching to a tolerant variety and pulling out the first yellow plants early made a big difference the next season. The whitefly is the real culprit.

I noticed the disease always came in worse from the field edges where weeds and old volunteer soybean plants were standing. After I cleaned up the bunds and removed those host weeds, the whitefly had fewer places to sit and the spread slowed. Keeping the surroundings clean is an easy step many of us skip.

Yellow sticky traps gave me an early idea of when whitefly numbers were rising so I could act before the virus spread across the field. Roguing out the first few infected plants the moment I saw them also helped. Remember no spray cures an infected plant, so it is all about the variety and the whitefly. Use only label recommended products.
