In several states millets like ragi, bajra and jowar are procured at MSP, often through state agencies and self-help groups or FPOs, and channelled into PDS, ICDS and mid-day meal schemes, with Odisha's millet mission being a well known example. To benefit, your FPO should register with the state nodal agency or millet mission, get farmers and acreage enrolled, follow the quality and moisture norms, and aggregate members' grain for delivery at the notified procurement centre. The Shree Anna and national millet push has expanded such procurement and demand. Coverage, crops and rates differ by state and year, so confirm the current procurement plan, registration steps and rates with your state agriculture department or millet mission office. Aggregating through the FPO gives small growers access they cannot get alone.

Through the millet mission our group sold ragi at a good supported rate into the scheme supply. Registration and quality norms are the key steps.

In Karnataka our ragi went into the scheme procurement, but enrolment had a deadline and registered acreage each season, so we had to apply before sowing. Missing the registration window once meant we sold that lot in the open market instead.

One caution: the procurement centre checks moisture and cleanliness strictly, so we now clean, destone and dry the grain well before bringing it. A rejected lot at the centre wastes the whole trip for the group.

In Madhya Pradesh our FPO keeps the member list, land records and bank details ready in advance, because the paperwork at registration time delayed our first season's payment. Having the documents in order got the payments through smoothly after that.

One tip from Maharashtra: a few of us went to the millet mission office in person to understand the exact crops and rates for our district, since it changes by year and state. Asking directly avoided wrong assumptions we had from a neighbouring district.

A caution from Telangana: do not assume every millet is procured everywhere, because our jowar was covered but a neighbour's small millet was not that year. Confirm crop by crop with the nodal agency before planning to sell into the scheme.
