Foxtail millet (kangni or korra) is promoted as a nutri-cereal because, compared with polished rice, it generally has more fibre, protein, minerals like iron and calcium, and a lower glycaemic response, which appeals to health and diabetic-conscious buyers. It is also drought hardy and grows on light soils with little water, so it fits dryland farming with low input cost. The market advantage is a premium, branded health-food positioning rather than bulk commodity sale, especially when you sell cleaned, dehulled grain, flour, rava or ready mixes through FPOs, health stores and city customers instead of loose grain to a trader. The Shree Anna and millet mission has boosted awareness and demand. To capture the premium, focus on quality, dehulling and value addition rather than competing with rice on volume.

Health buyers in the city pay well for clean foxtail millet and flour. Loose grain to a trader gets nothing extra, processing is where the money is.

In Andhra I sell small clean packs with a simple label at weekend farmer markets and to known families, and repeat customers come back for the quality. Building a few regular buyers got me a steadier premium than one-time mandi sale.

One caution: the premium is only there if the grain is truly clean and well dehulled. A poorly cleaned lot with husk and grit lost the health-buyer rate for me, so the processing quality decides the price.

In Karnataka I sell foxtail rava and a small millet ready-mix rather than only plain grain, because the value-added packs fetch much more per kg. Turning the grain into a finished product the customer can cook quickly lifted my margin the most.
