Barley is indeed more salt and drought tolerant than wheat and is well suited to parts of Rajasthan, with sowing generally in the rabi window from late October through November depending on your area. For saline soils, choose notified salt-tolerant barley varieties recommended for your zone rather than general types, and the current list is best taken from your district KVK or the barley research station. Pair it with good seed treatment, balanced fertiliser and gypsum if your soil test suggests it. Sowing dates and varieties vary by district, so confirm locally and use your Soil Health Card.

On my brackish-water plot barley does much better than wheat. I sow in November and it handles the salty water far better.

On salty patches I get better germination by giving one good pre-sowing irrigation to push the salts down a little before planting, then sowing into that moisture. On saline soil a weak, gappy stand is the first problem, so getting the seed up evenly matters even more than usual.

Get your soil and water tested at the KVK before deciding, because salinity has many grades. Mine was high enough that even barley struggled in the worst patch until I added gypsum as the soil test advised. Salt-tolerant does not mean salt-proof, so know your actual level first.
