Dark brown to black oily, water-soaked spots on the leaves and fruit, with the fruit later cracking, sometimes in an L-shaped split, and an oily halo around the spots, point most likely to bacterial blight, known locally as telya or oily spot. It is caused by a bacterium and spreads fast in warm humid and rainy weather, through rain splash, infected planting material and tools, causing heavy fruit loss. Confirm with your KVK, since anthracnose can look somewhat similar but the management differs. There is no easy cure once it is in the orchard, so the focus is prevention and reducing spread. Use clean, disease-free planting material, and adjust the cropping season (bahar) on KVK advice to avoid the most disease-prone rainy period. Prune out and destroy infected twigs, leaves and fruit, disinfect pruning tools between trees, and keep good orchard sanitation. Avoid overhead watering and excess nitrogen. KVK-recommended sprays for bacterial blight may combine copper-based products with antibiotic streptocycline at the advised stages, but follow the label, local recommendations, the pre-harvest interval, and residue and MRL limits, and do not overuse antibiotics. Plan the spray and bahar schedule with your horticulture department.

Telya nearly finished our orchard until we shifted the bahar away from the heavy rain months on KVK advice and got strict about sanitation and disinfecting the pruning shears between trees.

Tool hygiene is underrated. We were carrying the bacteria from sick trees to healthy ones on the secateurs. Now we wipe them with disinfectant between plants.
