Severely stunted banana plants with short, narrow, upright leaves crowded into a rosette or bunch at the top are the classic sign of banana bunchy top virus. Look closely and you may also see dark green streaks like Morse code dots and dashes along the leaf veins and midrib. The virus is spread by the banana aphid and also through infected suckers, so the disease moves when you plant suckers from sick plants. There is no cure once a plant is infected. The most important step is to remove infected plants completely, including the corm, as soon as you spot them, after first killing the aphids on them so the aphids do not fly to healthy plants. Then destroy the removed material. Always plant clean, virus-free suckers or tissue culture plants from a reliable source, never suckers from an affected field. Control the banana aphid with KVK-recommended measures to slow spread, following label and safe intervals. Please confirm the diagnosis with your KVK before uprooting, because nutrient problems can also cause bunching, and roguing is a strong step.

We lost a whole block because we kept using our own suckers. Now we buy tissue culture plants and the bunchy top problem has almost gone. Removing sick plants early really matters.

Spray or wipe out the aphids first, then dig out the plant with the corm. If you uproot first the aphids just shift to the next plant. Our extension officer taught us that order.
