Bunchy top is a virus spread by the banana aphid and through infected suckers, and there is no cure for an infected plant, so management is about prevention and removal. Use only certified virus-free tissue culture or clean planting material, and inspect new fields regularly for the typical stunted bunched-up top with narrow upright leaves and dark green streaks on the midrib. As soon as you spot a diseased plant, kill the aphids on it first with a labelled insecticide and then uproot and destroy the whole plant including the corm so it cannot act as a source. Control the aphid vector and avoid moving suckers from infected areas. Report serious outbreaks to your local KVK or horticulture department for area-wide guidance.

In Wayanad the mistake everyone makes is taking free suckers from a neighbour's field, that is how the virus walks into a new plot. We switched fully to tissue culture plants from a known lab and the bunchy top cases almost stopped. Spend on clean planting material, it is cheaper than losing a crop.

The order of removal matters and I learned it the hard way: if you uproot the infected plant first, the winged aphids fly off to healthy plants and spread it further. Spray to kill the aphids on the plant first, wait, then dig out the whole corm and burn it. Do not leave the rotting corm in the field.

Weekly walking through the young field and pulling out the first suspect plants early kept our block clean near Kalpetta. The early symptom is the leaves becoming short, upright and crowded at the top like a rosette. Once you train your eye to spot it small, you remove far fewer plants than if you wait.
