White legless maggots inside ripening fruit, with soft rotting patches and oozing, are almost certainly fruit fly. The female lays eggs under the skin of maturing fruit, the maggots feed inside, and the fruit rots and drops. It is one of the biggest causes of fruit loss near harvest. The first and cheapest tool is sanitation: collect and destroy all fallen and infested fruit daily by deep burying or putting them in a sealed bag in the sun, because leaving them on the ground keeps the cycle going. Hang fruit fly traps with a male lure such as methyl eugenol well before harvest to monitor and reduce males, and your KVK can advise the number of traps per acre. Protein bait sprays applied as spot patches on the canopy are a low-residue method many KVKs recommend, since you do not cover the whole fruit. Harvest at the correct maturity and do not let fruit over-ripen on the tree. If a cover spray is needed your KVK will give safe actives and timing, but mind the pre-harvest interval and residue and MRL limits, especially for export. Confirm with a photo of the cut fruit and maggots so it is not mistaken for internal breakdown.

Traps alone did not save us. The real change came when the whole village started picking up and burying fallen fruit daily. If your neighbour leaves rotten fruit lying around the flies just come back.

We use the bait patch method on a few spots per tree instead of spraying the whole fruit, and it keeps residue low for the mandi buyers.
