Cluster beans (guar) is a very hardy, drought tolerant warm season legume sown in the kharif from late June through July with the monsoon, ideal for the dry sandy soils of Rajasthan, Haryana and Gujarat. Choose your type by purpose: vegetable pod types for tender green pods sold fresh, and grain or gum types grown for the seed, whose endosperm yields guar gum that has strong industrial and export demand. Guar tolerates drought and poor soil and improves the soil through nitrogen fixation, making it a low risk dryland crop. Treat seed with Rhizobium for nodulation. Confirm the recommended variety for your purpose and the exact sowing window for your area with your KVK.
Decide first whether you want green pods for the vegetable market or grain for the gum trade, the variety differs. Guar is the toughest crop on our sandy Bikaner soil, it survives where everything else dies.
The grain guar for gum can fetch a high rate in a good export demand year, but the price swings a lot. Rhizobium treatment is cheap and the soil is better for the next crop.
