In the Kalaburagi (Gulbarga) belt, arhar (tur) is mainly sown with the kharif monsoon from late June through July. Long duration varieties need early sowing to use the full season, while medium duration types give more flexibility. For rainfed black soil, wider spacing of about 90 to 120 cm between rows and 20 to 30 cm between plants gives better branching and pod set than crowded planting. Many growers intercrop tur with a short pulse or oilseed in the wide rows for extra income and insurance. Treat seed with Rhizobium and a fungicide before sowing. Confirm the recommended variety and sowing window for your taluk with your KVK, as it shifts with monsoon onset.

Wide spacing really helps tur branch out here. When I sowed too close the plants were tall and thin with few pods. Now I keep wide rows and intercrop a short crop in the gap.

Early sowing with the first good rain gives me the best pod set. Late sown tur in our area struggles when the rains pull back early.
