Chia seed is very fine, so the seed rate per acre is low, roughly in the range of about 1 to 2 kg per acre depending on method. Because the seed is so small you cannot just broadcast it raw and expect even stand. Common practice is to mix the seed with dry sand or fine soil in a good ratio to spread it evenly, sow shallow because deep sowing kills emergence, and keep the seed bed fine and moist. Many growers sow in lines for easier weeding. Light, frequent moisture is needed for germination but avoid standing water.
