Sourcing seems to be a problem for shiitake. Where do Indian growers get good shiitake spawn and how do I pick a strain?

Shiitake spawn is less widely available than oyster or button spawn, so you usually have to get it from a specialised source. The ICAR Directorate of Mushroom Research (DMR) at Solan, some State Agricultural Universities and a few specialised private labs supply shiitake spawn and can advise on strains suited to Indian conditions, especially cooler regions. Strains differ in their temperature preference, colonisation time and whether they fruit warm or cool, so tell the supplier your location and season and ask for a strain that matches. Always confirm the spawn is fresh and pure. Because supply can be limited, plan ahead and order in good time. Start with a small trial batch of a recommended strain before committing to a big crop. DMR Solan is the best first point of contact for both spawn and strain advice.
I had to wait for spawn availability for shiitake, it is not on every shop shelf like oyster spawn. Booking early with the lab helped me.
