Grafted walnut usually starts bearing in about the fourth to sixth year and comes to good commercial yield over the following years, far earlier than seedling trees that can take a decade or more. A mature grafted tree may give roughly 15 to 40 kg or more of dry nuts depending on variety, age, climate and care, so income per tree at the going walnut rate can be meaningful once the orchard matures, but the early years earn little. Yield and price depend strongly on kernel colour and quality, with light coloured, thin shelled kernels fetching the premium. Treat the first years as investment years and intercrop where possible.
