I have a small piece of land and want maximum mango from it. People recommend Amrapali for close planting. Is it really suited to high density, and what yield can I expect?
Amrapali is a dwarf, regular-bearing hybrid (Dasheri x Neelum) bred specifically for high density planting, so it is an excellent choice for a small farm. Because of its compact, semi-dwarf growth you can plant it very close, commonly around 2.5 by 2.5 metres giving roughly 600+ plants per acre, far more than traditional mango. It is a late-season variety with deep orange, sweet pulp and high carotene, and importantly it is a regular bearer rather than strongly alternate, which gives more dependable annual income. Total per-acre yield from the high tree number can be high once established. The trade-offs: fruit size is small to medium, the small stone is good but some find the pulp firm, and the dense canopy needs annual pruning and good spray coverage to prevent disease and maintain quality. For a small holding wanting steady output, Amrapali is one of the best options.
Amrapali bears almost every year for me, that regularity is the real benefit. Fruit is on the smaller side but the count per acre makes up for it.
The dense planting needs pruning and good airflow or you get a lot of disease. With care it is very productive on small land.
