Thinking of expanding my Alphonso planting in Sindhudurg. Before I invest I want a realistic income picture per acre from a grown orchard, not the big numbers people post on social media. What should I expect after costs?
Be cautious with viral income figures. A traditional Konkan Alphonso orchard at about 100 trees per acre, once mature, can give a few hundred dozen per acre in a good year, but alternate bearing means the off year may be a fraction of that. Gross income swings widely with season timing, hailstorm or unseasonal rain damage, and market arrivals. After deducting spray costs (hopper, anthracnose, thrips), labour, harvesting, packing and transport, net margins are decent in a good year and can be thin or negative in a bad weather year. Treat mango as a multi-year average, not a single-year jackpot. Crop insurance under the restructured weather based scheme for mango is worth checking because Konkan sees frequent climate losses. Always verify current local input costs and market rates before projecting income.
Honest answer. Two years back unseasonal rain in February finished half my flowering. Mango income is good but never count on the same number every year.
Add packing and transport to Mumbai, those costs eat into the rate a lot. Selling direct online improved my net but it is extra work.
