Which climate and soil suit avocado and can I grow it in my area?

Avocado does best in a mild, frost-free climate with good rainfall or assured irrigation, and it absolutely needs well-drained soil because the roots rot quickly in waterlogged or heavy clay land. Hilly and semi-hill areas of Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra and parts of the north-east suit it better than hot dry plains. There are different races (Mexican, Guatemalan, West Indian) and varieties with different cold and heat tolerance, so variety choice matters for your specific climate. It is sensitive to strong hot dry winds and to salinity. Before planting, get your soil tested for drainage and pH, and confirm with your KVK or a horticulture university whether avocado and which variety is recommended for Chikkamagaluru, because it is still a relatively new commercial crop in India.

In our hill area it grows well but my neighbour in low wet land lost plants to root rot. Drainage is everything with avocado.

Drainage decides everything here. Low wet spots killed plants, raised mounds saved them.

Pick a variety suited to your climate. A friend planted the wrong type and it struggled in our heat.
