Dragon fruit is grown from stem cuttings, not seeds, so quality of the mother plant matters a lot. Per-cutting prices vary widely by region, variety and length, so do not rely on a single figure, ask 3 or 4 nurseries and compare. The main types planted in India are white-flesh (Hylocereus undatus), red-flesh (Hylocereus costaricensis, usually pricier) and the costly yellow type. Plant population is roughly 1700 to 2000 plants per acre depending on pole spacing, and the big one-time cost is the RCC or cement poles plus the supporting ring, not the cuttings themselves. Buy only from a nursery that can show you healthy, disease-free mother plants and tell you the exact variety. Verify current cutting and pole rates and the recommended variety for Kutch with your local KVK and a few established nurseries before ordering in bulk.

I planted in Bhuj two years back. The cuttings were a small part of my total cost, the cement poles and crossbars took most of the money. Make sure you get the variety you actually paid for, some sellers mix red and white.

Buy cuttings that are already a bit woody and hardened, the very soft green ones rotted for me in the first monsoon.

Compare at least three nurseries. The quotes I got for the same variety varied a lot, and one was selling mislabelled cuttings.

The cuttings were the cheap part for me too. Get them already hardened, the soft green ones rotted in my first monsoon.
