Overview

Papaya is a fast growing, short duration fruit crop that starts bearing within about eight to ten months and fruits almost continuously, so it needs a steady supply of nutrients in many small doses. It is a heavy feeder of nitrogen and potassium, with potash improving fruit size, sweetness and keeping quality. Because the root system is shallow and the plant fruits non stop, frequent split feeding or drip fertigation works far better than a few large doses. ICAR-IIHR and State Agricultural Universities recommend a per plant per year dose applied in about six bimonthly splits. The figures below are a per plant per year range. Always adjust them to your Soil Health Card or a fresh soil test, your variety such as Red Lady, Coorg Honey Dew or Pusa Delicious, and local KVK advice.

Recommended NPK dose for Papaya

A widely used range is about 200 to 250 g N, 200 to 250 g P2O5 and 250 to 500 g K2O per plant per year. The ICAR-IIHR recommendation for Coorg Honey Dew is 250 g N, 250 g P2O5 and 500 g K2O per plant per year in six bimonthly splits. A simpler practice is 200 g each of N, P2O5 and K2O per plant per year with 25 kg FYM. This works out to roughly 430 to 540 g urea, 1.25 to 1.55 kg single super phosphate and 420 to 830 g muriate of potash per plant. Treat these as a starting range and confirm with your soil test and KVK advice.

Application schedule

Apply FYM and part of the phosphorus at the time of planting in the pit. Split the full NPK dose into about six equal parts and apply them at roughly two month intervals, starting about the second month after planting and continuing through the year. Place fertilizer in a ring 20 to 30 cm away from the stem, fork it in lightly and irrigate, since the roots are shallow and tender. Under drip fertigation, give small weekly or fortnightly doses for steady feeding and best fruit set. Keep potash strong during the heavy fruiting phase.

Organic & bio-fertilizers

Apply 10 to 25 kg of well rotted farmyard manure or compost per plant per year, with a good part given in the pit at planting. Vermicompost at 2 to 5 kg per plant improves the shallow root zone. Biofertilizers such as Azospirillum and phosphate solubilising bacteria at about 25 to 50 g each per plant help nutrient supply. Because papaya roots are shallow and sensitive to waterlogging, mix organic manure well into the basin and keep the soil loose, well drained and lightly mulched.

Micronutrients & deficiency signs

Papaya commonly needs boron, zinc and magnesium. Boron deficiency causes lumpy, distorted fruit with latex flow on the surface and poor fruit set, and is a frequent problem. Zinc deficiency gives small mottled leaves and short internodes. Magnesium deficiency yellows the margins of older leaves while the centre stays green. Correct with foliar sprays such as 0.1 to 0.2 percent borax, 0.5 percent zinc sulphate and 0.5 percent magnesium sulphate. Always confirm the need with leaf analysis or KVK advice, and avoid excess boron as papaya is sensitive to it.

Tips & cautions

Feed little and often because papaya fruits continuously and has shallow roots. Drip fertigation gives the best results and saves fertilizer. Keep potash strong for sweet, well sized fruit. Never let the basin waterlog, as papaya roots rot quickly and the plant collapses. Apply fertilizer in a ring away from the stem and irrigate after. Avoid heavy single doses that can scorch roots. Watch for boron related lumpy fruit and correct early with a light borax spray confirmed by a leaf test.
