Papaya Ring Spot Virus Control

Symptoms
Caused by Papaya ring spot virus, spread by aphids. Young leaves show yellow mosaic, mottling and blistering, and leaf blades become reduced and shoestring like in severe cases. Dark green oily streaks appear on the stem and leaf stalks, and the fruit develops characteristic ring shaped spots and uneven, poor quality flesh.
Damage
Papaya ring spot is a major virus threat to papaya and disease incidence in surveyed Indian districts has ranged from about fifty to one hundred percent. It stunts plants, reduces fruit number, size and sugar, and causes ringed blemished fruit of poor market value. Early infection can make the crop almost worthless.
Organic & cultural control
Use virus free healthy seedlings and tolerant varieties where available. Since aphids spread the virus, avoid the high aphid season by adjusting transplanting time and raise tall barrier crops like maize around the field to intercept aphids. Inspect regularly and rogue out infected plants early, control weeds that host the virus, and conserve natural enemies of aphids.
Chemical control
No chemical cures the virus, so sprays target the aphid vector; a programme of recommended insecticides combined with micronutrients at regular intervals has given good protection and high benefit in trials, alongside roguing and barrier crops. Spraying alone will not stop spread without sanitation. Always read and follow the label, observe the pre-harvest interval, and consult your KVK or agronomist.
Always follow the product label, the recommended pre-harvest interval, and your local KVK or agronomist. Pesticide approvals change, so verify before use.
Prevention
Start with healthy virus free seedlings and grow tolerant varieties. Adjust transplanting to avoid peak aphid activity and surround the field with a tall barrier crop. Survey fields often and remove infected plants before aphids spread the virus, keep the field and bunds weed free, and avoid planting new papaya next to old infected blocks.
