What India exports to Spain
Import rules and access for Spain
Spain applies EU food law, enforced by AESAN and regional authorities. High-level points: EU harmonised pesticide MRLs with a low default where none is set, EU contaminant limits (aflatoxins, ETO, pesticides, heavy metals), full traceability under the General Food Law, EU labelling rules with Spanish-language labels at retail, phytosanitary certificates for plant products, and EU border controls including increased checks on certain Indian foods. Limits change; verify current EU MRLs, certification and labelling with your Spanish importer, APEDA and AESAN/EU authorities before shipping.
Demand and opportunity
A solid EU market with rising interest in ethnic and Asian foods, spices and specialty ingredients, supported by a growing South Asian community. Organic demand is increasing. Spanish-language compliant labelling and dependable quality documentation help secure retail and distributor relationships.
Payment and avoiding scams
Prefer confirmed LC or secured advance with new buyers and verify the company in the Spanish Mercantile Register (Registro Mercantil). Legitimate buyers do not ask exporters to prepay clearance, agent or release fees; treat such requests as advance-fee scams.
Practical notes
EU rules apply in full, including the ETO ban and increased import controls on certain Indian spices, sesame and produce for residues and contaminants. Verified ETO-free sourcing and aflatoxin control are essential for nuts and spices.
Import requirements for Spain change often. Verify current permits, duties, MRLs and labelling with your importer and the Spain food/plant authority before shipping.
