What India exports to New Zealand
Import rules and access for New Zealand
New Zealand has strict biosecurity and food rules enforced by the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI). High-level points: biosecurity Import Health Standards (IHS) with permits, treatments and phytosanitary certificates for many products, food-safety requirements, pesticide MRLs under the NZ (Maximum Residue Levels) Food Notice with a low default where none is set, and labelling under the joint Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code including country of origin. Many fresh items are restricted or need treatment. Limits change; verify current import health standards, MRLs and labelling with your NZ importer, APEDA and MPI before shipping.
Demand and opportunity
A growing Indian community supports demand for rice, spices, pulses and ethnic packaged foods. Shared food standards with Australia mean compliant products can often suit both markets. Processed and shelf-stable goods generally face fewer biosecurity hurdles than fresh produce.
Payment and avoiding scams
Prefer confirmed LC or secured advance with new buyers and verify the company via the NZ Companies Register. Genuine importers do not ask exporters to prepay biosecurity, agent or clearance fees; treat upfront-fee demands as advance-fee scams.
Practical notes
Like Australia, biosecurity is very strict and many fresh products are prohibited or require approved treatment, so most trade is in dried, processed or shelf-stable forms. Check the relevant Import Health Standard for each product before shipping.
Import requirements for New Zealand change often. Verify current permits, duties, MRLs and labelling with your importer and the New Zealand food/plant authority before shipping.
