What India exports to Italy
Import rules and access for Italy
Italy applies EU food law, enforced by the Ministry of Health and local health authorities (ASL), with customs and ICQRF involvement. High-level points: EU harmonised pesticide MRLs with a low default where none is set, EU contaminant limits (aflatoxins, ETO, pesticides, heavy metals), full traceability under the General Food Law, EU labelling rules with Italian-language labels at retail, phytosanitary certificates for plant products, and EU border controls including increased checks on certain Indian foods. Limits change; verify current EU MRLs, certification and labelling with your Italian importer, APEDA and Italian/EU authorities before shipping.
Demand and opportunity
A significant EU market with strong food culture and demand for quality ingredients, spices and specialty rice, plus a sizeable South Asian community in northern cities. Organic and clean-label products have a receptive audience. Reliable documentation and Italian-language labelling support retail entry.
Payment and avoiding scams
Use confirmed LC or secured advance for first orders and verify the buyer via the Italian business register (Registro Imprese / Camera di Commercio). Real importers never ask suppliers to prepay agent, customs or release fees; such demands indicate advance-fee fraud.
Practical notes
EU rules apply in full, including the ETO ban and increased import controls on certain Indian spices, sesame and produce for residues, ETO and aflatoxins. Italy has had multiple alerts on sesame and spice residues, so lab testing before export is important.
Import requirements for Italy change often. Verify current permits, duties, MRLs and labelling with your importer and the Italy food/plant authority before shipping.
