What India exports to France
Import rules and access for France
France applies EU food law, enforced by the DGCCRF and DGAL. High-level points: EU harmonised pesticide MRLs with a low default where none is set, EU contaminant limits (aflatoxins, ETO, pesticides, heavy metals), full traceability under the General Food Law, EU labelling rules with French-language labels at retail, phytosanitary certificates for plant products, and EU border controls including increased official checks on certain Indian foods. Limits change; verify current EU MRLs, certification and labelling with your French importer, APEDA and DGCCRF/DGAL/EU authorities before shipping.
Demand and opportunity
A large EU consumer market with appreciation for quality, organic and specialty foods, premium spices and fine teas. Diaspora and growing interest in Indian cuisine support ethnic food sales. French retail rewards strong quality assurance and French-language compliant packaging.
Payment and avoiding scams
Prefer confirmed LC or secured advance with new buyers and verify the company in the French trade register (RCS / SIREN). Genuine French importers do not ask exporters to prepay clearance, agent or licence fees. Upfront-fee requests are a classic advance-fee scam.
Practical notes
France was central to EU-wide recalls of products containing ethylene oxide; ETO is banned in the EU and is a frequent cause of recalls in spices, seeds and additives. Strong ETO-free sourcing proof and lab testing are essential. French-language labelling is required at retail.
Import requirements for France change often. Verify current permits, duties, MRLs and labelling with your importer and the France food/plant authority before shipping.
