Sigatoka Leaf Spot of Banana Control

Symptoms
Caused by Mycosphaerella fungi. Small yellow green streaks appear on leaves, enlarging into brown to black spots with yellow halos and grey centres. Spots merge, large areas of leaf die, and badly affected plants look scorched. It is worst in warm humid and high rainfall banana belts.
Damage
By destroying leaf area, sigatoka reduces photosynthesis, so bunches are smaller, fruit fills poorly, and ripening becomes uneven and premature. Heavy infection can cut yield substantially and shorten the productive life of the plant. The disease spreads fast in monsoon humidity.
Organic & cultural control
Plant at correct spacing and remove excess suckers so leaves dry quickly and humidity stays low. Cut off and bury or burn old, badly spotted lower leaves regularly to remove spore sources. Ensure good drainage and avoid overhead watering. Spraying horticultural mineral oil with a bio agent can slow mild infection.
Chemical control
Protectant fungicides such as mancozeb or chlorothalonil and systemic triazoles or strobilurins are sprayed in rotation, often mixed with mineral oil for better coverage, starting when first spots appear and repeating as per disease pressure.
