Panama Wilt of Banana Control

Affects: Banana
Panama Wilt of Banana symptoms and control in Banana

Symptoms

Caused by the soil fungus Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cubense. Older leaves yellow from the margins and collapse around the pseudostem like a skirt while the heart leaf stays erect. The pseudostem base often splits. Cutting the stem shows reddish brown discoloured strands in the inner tissue.

Damage

Panama wilt is a destructive soil borne disease that blocks the plant water channels, causing wilting and death. Yearly losses in India are about thirty to forty percent in affected areas. The new tropical race four strain attacks even Cavendish types and the fungus survives in soil for many years, making infected fields hard to replant.

Organic & cultural control

Use only disease free tissue culture planting material and resistant or tolerant varieties. Uproot and burn affected plants and do not replant banana in heavily infected soil for at least three to four years. Improve drainage, raise soil organic matter, and apply Trichoderma and Pseudomonas bio agents to the soil and corm to suppress the fungus.

Chemical control

There is no reliable chemical cure once a plant is infected, so management relies on resistant varieties, clean material and soil health; corm dip or soil drench with a recommended fungicide such as carbendazim is sometimes used as a partial measure. Always read and follow the label, observe the pre-harvest interval, and consult your KVK or agronomist before any chemical use.

Always follow the product label, the recommended pre-harvest interval, and your local KVK or agronomist. Pesticide approvals change, so verify before use.

Prevention

The single most important step is planting resistant or tolerant varieties using clean tissue culture suckers in fungus free soil. Avoid moving soil, water, tools or suckers from infected fields, which spread the fungus. Maintain good drainage, balanced nutrition and high organic matter to keep plants vigorous and soil microbes active.

FAQs

Can I cure a banana plant with Panama wilt?
No reliable cure exists once a plant is infected because the fungus lives inside the water channels. The infected plant should be uprooted and burnt, and management focuses on prevention with resistant varieties and clean soil.
How long does the fungus stay in the soil?
The Panama wilt fungus can survive in soil for many years, even decades, on its own and on weeds. That is why infected fields should not be replanted with banana for at least three to four years.
Does tropical race four affect all bananas?
Tropical race four is a dangerous strain that attacks Cavendish and many other varieties that older strains could not, and it has spread into parts of Asia including India. Using clean material and strict field hygiene is critical to limit it.
