A small power weeder is often worth it on a vegetable plot where hand weeding is slow and labour is scarce or costly, because it loosens soil and removes weeds between rows far faster and can also be used for light intercultivation. Battery models are quiet and low maintenance but have limited run time per charge, while petrol mini tillers run longer and handle harder soil but need more upkeep. For under an acre of vegetables with row spacing that fits the machine, it usually pays back in saved labour over a few seasons, especially if you weed frequently. Make sure your bed spacing matches the weeder width and the soil is not too stony. Many states give subsidy on power weeders, so check your horticulture or agriculture department.

I hired a power weeder from a neighbour for a season before buying to be sure it suited my bed spacing and soil. It clearly beat hand weeding on cost and time, so I then bought my own. Trying it first saved me from a wrong purchase.

I bought a small petrol weeder for my vegetable rows and it replaced two labourers for inter row weeding. Just keep your row spacing matched to the machine or it damages plants.

On buy versus hire, for well under an acre I first hired a weeder from a neighbour through the season to be sure it earned its keep before spending. The saving over hired hand weeding labour was clear, and only then did I buy. If a machine sits idle most days, hiring or sharing one with another small grower can make more sense than owning.

My battery model is quiet and easy but the run time per charge is limited, so for a full day I keep a spare battery; a friend chose petrol for longer runs in harder soil. Match the type to your plot size and soil. And check the horticulture subsidy first.
