Our area is known for a special variety of rice. People mention GI tag for better price and protection. What is it and how does my district apply?

A Geographical Indication (GI) tag is a legal recognition that a product comes from a specific region and has a quality or reputation linked to that place, like Basmati rice or Nagpur orange. It protects the name from misuse and lets registered producers from that area market under the GI, which can command a premium and build buyer trust. A GI is applied for by an association, producer body, cooperative or government agency, not usually a single farmer, and the application goes to the GI Registry under the Controller General of Patents, Designs and Trademarks. After registration, genuine producers register as authorised users. To pursue it, organise local growers into a body, document the product's history and uniqueness, and seek help from your state horticulture or agriculture department, an FPO federation or a research institute. Check current procedure on the official GI Registry.

The GI is applied for by a producer body or association, not one farmer, so the first real step is organising local growers into a registered group. We spent more time on that and on documenting our variety than on the form itself. Be ready for patience and paperwork.

Our growers formed a society and worked with a research centre to document our variety. Getting recognised as authorised GI users helped us market under the regional name. It takes patience and paperwork.

A GI tag protects the name but it does not automatically raise your price; you still have to market the produce under it and maintain quality. After registration each genuine grower must enrol as an authorised user. Treat it as one tool in marketing, not a magic premium.
